Man is this one as cool as it gets! So this is our version of the “Infamous” Robbie Robertson Strat from “The Band’s” final performance The Last Waltz. So I will start with the original…. So the original Strat was actually dipped in Bronze, basically the same process as those creepy baby shoes that people used dip in bronze as a keep sake for their toddlers years ago.
Anyway Robbie was a Tele player, and always complained that the middle pickup on a stratocaster got in the way of his picking hand. So his solution was to flip the middle pickup around and stack it on top of the bridge, and then wire them in series for beefy tone similar to a humbucker. Then went with a simple 3way switch with position 3 being the neck, position 2 having all three pickups together which gives you a similar tone to a telecaster, and then position 1 as the beefy middle and bridge in series. All three single coils were Fender with the neck coming from a ‘57, middle from a ‘62 and then the bridge I believe was a ‘69.
Anyway, I tried to keep my version as consistent to the original as possible. The body is Mahogany, which I prepped and sealed with only one coat of sealer so some of that grain could still peek through in places, the applied three coats of Metallic Statue Bronze Paint by hand and once it was dry finished it with clear lacquer. The neck is same specs as the original and I went with Lollar’s for the pickups and wired everything the same as the original. Hit me up with any questions!
